Pooja Room Vastu Direction
The pooja room is the spiritual centre of the home, and the north-east (Ishan) is its ideal direction. This zone carries positive, calm energy that supports meditation and prayer.
Place idols so that you face east or north while praying, keep the mandir off bedroom and toilet walls, and never position it under a staircase. A well-placed pooja space brings peace and clarity to the household.
The north-east is the sacred zone for worship
The pooja or prayer room belongs in the north-east (Ishanya), the most sacred direction in Vastu, governed by Ishwara. Placing the mandir in the north-east aligns worship with the home's most spiritually charged corner, supporting peace, clarity and positive energy. The east and north are acceptable alternatives, but the north-east is ideal.
The person praying is best oriented facing east or north. Idols and images are placed so that the worshipper faces these directions, and the mandir is kept a little raised, clean and well-lit. The north-east's natural morning light reinforces the sanctity of the space.
How to set up the mandir correctly
Keep idols slightly away from the wall rather than flush against it, and avoid placing them directly facing each other. Do not position the pooja space under a staircase, inside a bedroom facing the bed, or sharing a wall with a toilet — these are common defects. A threshold or small step up into the pooja area is considered auspicious.
Store worship items in the south-west of the pooja room, and keep the north-east of the space open and light. Natural materials, calm colours and good ventilation all support the room's purpose.
Placement when a dedicated room isn't possible
In compact homes a full pooja room may not be feasible, and that is fine — a clean, well-placed mandir shelf or cabinet in the north-east of the living area or kitchen (away from the sink and stove) works well. What matters most is the north-east placement, the eastward-facing worshipper, and keeping the space clean and separate from toilets and beds. A Vastu check can suggest the best spot for a mandir in your specific layout.
