A 4BHK — often a large flat, duplex or independent house — gives you the room to place almost everything in its ideal zone, which is a real advantage. Anchor the master bedroom in the south-west, and distribute the remaining bedrooms so that children use the west or north-west, guests use the north-west, and any bedroom doubling as a study leans towards the north or east.

With more space you can also give the pooja room a dedicated spot in the north-east, keep the kitchen firmly in the south-east, and reserve the north and east for living, dining and light-filled common areas. The larger the home, the more the classical principle of open north-east and grounded south-west can be fully expressed.

Bigger homes have more utilities to place carefully. Check that no toilet or bathroom falls in the north-east, and keep the exact centre (the brahmasthan) free of heavy fixtures, toilets or a staircase. In a multi-storey 4BHK, place the staircase in the south, west or south-west and keep it clockwise where possible.

Utility zones — laundry, storage, servant's room — are best towards the west and north-west. Overhead water tanks belong in the south-west or west, while any underground water source suits the north-east or north.

A 4BHK has many rooms and therefore many individual placements, each either helping or hurting the overall balance.
